CHAPTER 14

The maintenance crew doctored me up and gave me whatever food they could scrounge up from their breakroom. My manners went out the window as they handed me a plate. The sandwiches were a bit stale, but they were the tastiest damn things I ever had.

Commander Bolden was a fair woman. She kept her young crew under control with kind words and discipline. They basked in her praise. She had been in charge of maintenance since the station was created, some thirty years ago. The room at the bottom was originally a barracks for overnight rotations, but people complained about odd noises and weird lights, so they turned the room into an overflow area when required. Considering all the dust, necessary hadn’t happened in a very long time.

Her staff took care of maintaining the inner core of the power conduit. They knew how to work the magnetic catchers that stored the energy from the flares, as well as basic station care. They were a catchall unit.

She knew of Zoagashta. She said they were full of heart and one of the nicest people living on the station. She reassured me they would be found and they would be the one holding hostages.

“So, the Siwu. I think they’re looking for me. I have an ability they’re desperate for.” I leaned back in my chair and blinked away the sudden bout of dizziness and exhaustion. I wanted to sleep and stay asleep until everything was back to normal.

“The Siwu are a particularly nasty group. How did your ship get targeted?” Commander Bolden asked, studying me from her spot at the conference/dinner table. Her crew had dispersed to work on tasks that would help reconnect us to the rest of the station.

“The former captain had a connection to the Siwu he had planned on exploiting, but unfortunately for him, he got caught. We sent most of that faction to the prison planet. I guess they took offense?” I shrugged and sipped at the tea someone had made for me.

“Why do they want you?”

“Well, I developed… I can talk to ship’s hearts,” I said, ducking my head down. It was odd discussing this like it was nothing.

Commander Bolden was calm and relaxed, like it was nothing new to her. “It can happen to… Terrans sometimes. You’ve been living in the same ship as your ship’s heart as well as working closely with her?” Bolden asked as she scratched her chin.

I nodded.

“It happens. Terrans are susceptible to changes in chemistry when they’re physically close to a psychic animal. You guys absorb so much.”

“You’re not Terran?” I asked hesitantly. With a name like Bolden, I had been sure she was from the Sol system. Her features were similar. She had the pale peachy skin of a planet dweller, along with rounded ears and evenly spaced green eyes.

“I am not. I’ve also been on the station for a long time and have lived among Asyrans and mechaniques, so I know how ship’s hearts and their bonded work. You’re not a freak, Commander.
